Javelina women’s basketball record broken
While the rest of Javelina Nation was on a much-needed winter break, point guard Mia Rivers was passing the basketball and unbeatable records.
On Tuesday, Jan. 6, the Javelina Woman’s Basketball team took on the St. Edwards University Goats after which the Javelinas took home victory and witnessed history.
In a seemingly storybook chain of events with only four minutes left in the fourth quarter, Rivers dished the ball to Veyda Lake to take the lead and break the TAMUK Woman’s Basketball All Time Assist Record, a record which is no small feat for the young guard considering that although records are made to be broken, they don’t get broken every day.
Rivers broke the record with 371 assists passing Lorie Martinez at 370 but is continuing to set up her teammates. With 10 regular season games left, the record is becoming farther and farther out of reach with Rivers truly only competing with herself at the top of that all-time list.
Despite breaking a historical record and getting the win Rivers basked in her storied moment but remained a humble leader committed to her teammates.
“It’s definitely an honor to be able to break a record, especially an assist record that, you know, isn’t something that’s individualized, it’s something that me and my teammates accomplished together,” Rivers said.
However, Rivers’s impact as the point guard runs much deeper than just breaking records, creating plays and running the court. The type of leadership Rivers displays is hard to find and it truly highlights how much of a team player and born leader Rivers truly is.
Teammate Jade Tschritter had nothing but high praise for her unselfish point guard.
“At the beginning of the year, she wrote every one of us a letter saying what she expects of us this season and how much she loves us as a teammate and to have someone being willing to do that is such a leader on our team,” Tschritter said.
