Javelinas succumb to Texas Woman’s University’s offense
The Javelina volleyball team has been serving up wins and jumping up the leader board in the Lone Star Conference (LSC), despite a loss at home Sept. 19.
The team sits third in the LSC after winning four-in-a-row on the road at the Mountaineer Volleyball Classic pulling off a sweep in the tournament.
The Javelinas faltered against the Texas Woman’s University (TWU) volleyball team on “SURF and SERVE: Tropical Night” at home.
The Javelinas got off to a slow start dropping the first set but came back to win the next two but ultimately dropped the final two sets of the night losing 3-to-2.
Letting TWU hit all over the court and the lack of defense was a point of emphasis head coach Tanya Allen-Gonzalez reiterated in the post-game conference.
“We let too many of their hitters hit for really ridiculously high hitting percentages…We weren’t in the right position, so we just made it very difficult for ourselves on defense,” Allen-Gonzalez said.
Although the team lost, they are still in a good position to continue their fast-paced start to the season as they have the veteran players who can pick up the team after a loss.
Allen-Gonzalez will be looking to lean on senior middle blocker Ayanna Jackson to lift the team.
Jackson is also relied on to play her dominant style of volleyball that has already racked up some major accolades this year, including Co-MVP at the Mountaineer Volleyball Classic with fellow teammate Meghan Stiefer.
Steifer is also surfing the hot streak by scoring the second most points and leading the team in kills by a wide margin.
