Torch lit for Hoglympics
This fall semester, Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) is embracing the spirit of athleticism with the Hoglympics. This event invited students to engage in friendly competition, igniting school spirit and camaraderie as they kick off the new fall semester. The Campus Activities Board (CAB) set up a landscape of activities at the intramural complex for students to showcase their athletic abilities to other Javelinas on campus on Sept. 18. Not only was it designed to get blood pumping, but also to give students a fun outlet to unwind and stay active amid their classes and homework.
“It’s a way for students to get out of their dorms, have a place to engage with others socially and give them an outlet with being in a small town like Kingsville. We want to make sure that we have different events for students to stay active and engage in,” Executive Director for CAB Sophia Yzaguirre said.
The event featured a variety of games, including soccer, mini-basketball, darts sumo-wrestling, a wrecking ball challenge and obstacle courses. Javelinas had the chance to test and show off their skills in aim, speed and strength.
“My favorite activity was the wrecking ball and trying to knock my friends off the podiums. Up next is sumo-wrestling, I’m excited,” sophomore Anthony Gongora said. “It’s a fun way to get outside from being stuck in books and being able to join the community, try new things and meet new people.”
Hoglympics fostered a community among students, allowing them to connect through their shared interests in sports outside of the typical classroom environment.
“Hoglympics stands out to me because it’s available to all students and after classes, so it’s more convenient for people like me who’s always on the go. It’s a good way to de-stress,” junior Zoe Torres said.
Members of CAB promote Hoglympics and more to encourage students to stay active, enjoy the outdoor lifestyle and enhance the college experience.
“I would encourage students to come to our CAB events to gather with one another and form that sense of community with the fellow students of TAMUK,” Yzaguirre said. “You can come with a group of friends or come on your own, and we’ll for sure have people to stay active with you.” For other events like this, see CAB on Instagram @tamukcab to stay updated on all upcoming activities.
