A wrap on cross country

Record breaking season

The Javelina men’s and women’s cross country team season has crossed the finish line in a speedy fashion this fall semester.

On Saturday, Oct. 26 the Javelinas competed against the best of the best on their home turf at Dick Kleberg Park in the 2024 Lone Star Conference (LSC) Cross Country Championship.

The women’s teams saw athletes like senior Ivanova Yanes and Maya Espinosa take home ninth and eleventh earning them both all-conference honors.

This also marks the first time since at least 2006 that multiple Javelinas finished all-conference for the women’s team.

Assistant coach Zachary Hall was extremely pleased at how well both teams ran this year accomplishing his five-year goal in just three years from when he came from another university.

“Yanes and Espinosa ran with me at my previous institution, so it’s been a long time coming. I’m real excited for them because this conference is so much better than our last conference. So, it means a lot more that these two are successful here. And going into regionals, I think it sets us up in a pretty good place of success.” Hall said.

On the other side of the finish line the men’s team saw an eight-place finish which was its highest team placement since 2018.

Many of the Javelina men’s team also ran personal records on their way to the fastest team average time since 2009.

However, the accolades at LSC Championship were just part of the Javelinas success this season where we saw both the men’s and women’s team break records all season.

Javelina fans saw back in Sept. when the Women’s team paced their way to a first-place win and fastest time in program history while the men’s team saw another impressive second place win.

Lastly, in the second half of the season both teams saw multiple top 10 finishes and again multiple records being broken.

The Javelinas will look to build on their success at the NCAA Division II Regionals in Denver, CO on November 16.
