Baseball home series win
Coming into the four-game series against the University of Texas Permian Basin Falcons. The Javelinas were on a three-game winning streak coming off a 15-3 victory over Texas A&M International.
The Hogs were sitting at 5-4 on the season with a 4-4 conference record. The Falcons came into the series 2-6 coming off a four-game series split with Texas A&M International the weekend prior.
The Hogs would take off in the late innings of game one catching the first win of the series 8-4.
Senior Karson Shepherd was credited with the win in game one recording three innings pitched with five strikeouts. Credited with the save was redshirt freshman Tyler Schumann.
Junior Isaiah Aguilar along with junior Jayden Martinez and freshman Maurice Martinez all managed to record two hits each. Aguilar accounted for one run himself and brought in two more scorers for the Javelinas.
On the mound making his first Division II career start in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader was UTSA transfer Ulisis Quiroga.
He pitched all seven innings of game two, and threw just 86 pitches, recording 62 strikes followed by striking out seven Falcons. Quiroga would register his second win of the season with a 5-0 victory.
The scoring started quickly in the bottom of the first for the Javelinas. Sophomore Joshua Endo got the bats going starting off with a base hit. Senior Vincent Sanchez and junior Jacob Queva would find themselves on base via balls making bases loaded.
Junior Elijah West would single to left field bringing in Endo for the first score of the game. Followed by a Nick Reyes single to right field bringing in two runs pushing the score to 3-0. Last score of the first would come from a sac-fly ball to left field where West would tag up and score to extend their lead to 4-0. In the fourth Endo would also later bring in Maurice for the Javelinas final score of the game.
Sophomore Gabriel LeBlanc got the nod for game three. He allowed an RBI single in the first inning, but West would take no time to answer back, tying the game at one apiece.
LeBlanc would settle down to finish with four innings pitched and three strikeouts also credited with the win. This would be win number two for LeBlanc on the season.
Aguilar and Endo would cross home plate off an error in the third inning, and Sanchez would score off a sac-fly from Cueva for the final score of 4-3.
As the Javelinas were going into Sunday’s game they were looking to pull off a clean 4-0 series win. Game four would end up being a 8-7 victory that took 10 innings to crown a victor.
Game four wouldn’t start off the way any Hog would want it to start. The Falcons quickly would get on the board putting the Javelinas trailing 0-6 after the first inning.
The Javelinas would see their first scoring action in the third inning as Endo would start it off bringing in Fisher Davis with a single to left. Maurice and Endo would bring in the other two runs of the inning to make it Javelinas trailing 3-6.
That wasn’t all we would hear from Endo and Maurice as they would have another RBI each pushing the score to 5-7 as we headed into the bottom of the seventh. Queva would score off an interference call by the shortstop, and sophomore Sergio Galvan would hit a pop fly to right field as junior Damian Carreon tagged up and came in for the tying run. The game would stay tied at 7-7 and would take the game into extra innings.
In the tenth inning Galvan would get himself on base with a double down the left field line putting himself into scoring position. Davis would come up to bat and lay down a bunt to help advance Galvan to third, but with an error throw by the Falcons Galvan was able to reach home for the game winning score.
The Javelinas would scratch and crawl their way back to a 8-7 victory. Sweeping the series against the Falcons, and extending their season record to 9-4 on the year. The Javelinas head back on the road to take on the University of Texas at Tyler Patriots in a four game series next week.
