TAMUK’s very own movie star
“‘Let Me Be With You’ tells its story emotionally from an adolescent perspective, managing to be unique with its great story of a love without borders and without time. The cast shines with their excellent performances, highlighting the protagonists Andrea Sutton and Aksel Gómez who have extraordinary chemistry on screen. The work of director Isaac Cherem is masterful,” an IMDB featured user review said.
Over the winter break a former Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) student Aksel Gómez was the star in the film“Déjame Estar Contingo” or “Let Me Be With You.”
Gómez recently graduated this past winter commencement with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts.
The film was released on Jan. 30 and was written by Fernanda Equiarte and directed by Isaac Cherem.
Gómez plays the character Bruno who falls in love with his co-star Andrea Sutton who plays Lucía who has an incurable illness, Bruno then gets deported to Mexico and must fight his way back to Lucia.
Although Gómez just graduated, he was a student of TAMUK’s Fulden Wissinger who is an Art professor who had nothing but praise and joy for Gómez.
“I am so proud of Aksel, you know it’s a hard business, but he managed it. He finished school, and he was a good student and did very well in his classes. He was also very dedicated, and he accomplished it,” Wissinger said.
Wissinger is also excited for the example he has set for future TAMUK students and the way this can help a lot more people see TAMUK.
“Gómez is going to represent not just the department but the whole university. You know he called me, and he has a good relationship with me and other professors and that means we meant something to him and that we made a difference in his life. When he goes and talks and does whatever he does everybody is going to know he is a graduate from Texas A&M Kingsville,” Wissinger said.
With Gómez being a former student other fine art program students can see how being an actor is something possible and can be done.
“Working on this movie and seeing it fully for the first time taught me so much about myself. It taught me to put myself out there a bit more and to take a risk. Not only because of what the message is behind the film, but because of what that could mean as an artist or anyone who is exploring a new venture. You kind of just have to go for it, no matter what,” Gomez said.
“Let Me Be With You” also can be a positive influence as life is mirroring art today like with Gómez’s charachter’s challenge.
“The timing of everything was pretty crazy, because this film was actually slated to be released a bit earlier, but because of scheduling reasons it was released at a time where deportation is at a focus in our political climate much like what my character Bruno is going through. It just amplifies the need to continue to tell stories like this and to provide a bit of perspective,” Gómez said.
Since “Let Me Be With You” was just recently released in Mexico it is not available to stream in the United States just yet.
However, there is talk of it coming to HBO Max because it’s distributed by 20th Century Studios, which has a streaming deal with HBO Max.
As part of this deal, with 20th Studious films, the film will be available to stream on HBO Max after leaving theaters.
