Baseball team takes on MiLB in exhibition
Prior to Wednesday night’s exhibition matchup, the Javelinas had only played the Corpus Christi Hooks once in April 2023.
The Hogs came into the April 2 game off a short break after weather conditions pushed the Javelinas vs. Rams series back to two doubleheader matchups Sunday and Monday.
In a pre-game interview the Hook’s Field Chief Ricky Riviera said, “I think this shows the support this baseball community has around here. It shows how big this is and shows how nobody is too big or too little to play anybody. You know, we’re a professional Double-A team playing a Division II team. That’s awesome.”
The first pitch was thrown by TAMUK President Dr. Robert H. Vela, as TAMUK celebrates its 100-year anniversary.
The match then started with leadoff hitter Maurice Martinez reaching first via an error.
The Javelinas would wind up scoreless in the exhibition match, however, would tally up four hits on the night. Nick Reyes and Jacob Queva were able to register some hits against the MLB-affiliated Hooks.
The Javelina fans that attended didn’t only get to see their offense have some moments.
They also got to see a large portion of the Javelina bull-pen pitch in the matchup. Five members of the pitching staff recorded a strikeout against the Hooks.
Following the match Head Coach Jason Gonzales said the game was meant to be fun.
“Well just the environment and how fun it is to play this game and in front of these fans,” he said of the exhibition matchup. “All our guys aspire to one day play at this level, and they have to understand what it takes to play at this level and it’s not easy. But again, what a tremendous job that the Hooks do and the entire organization. So, it’s a lot of fun for us to be out here.”
