RECtravaganza kicks off the semester

Javelinas had options that included waterslides, yard games, bubble soccer, pickleball, tennis and sand volleyball at a recent event showing the university’s student recreation center.

“The goal of RECtravaganza is to have a good time with the students and let them know what they have at the university. They could see the sports and activities that go on through the entire year,” TAMUK Recreation Center’s Student Director Alan Hernandez said of the event held Wednesday, Aug. 27.

While RECtravaganza typically draws a large crowd on its own, this year’s event carried special meaning. As part of TAMUK’s Centennial celebration, the Associate Dean of Academic Success invited all students to join in an historic J-shaped group photo.

“I saw that the event was going to be big, so I got excited and decided to come. It’s nice to see everyone out here,” freshman Brianna Gomez said. “I’ve gone to other events on campus, so far this was the biggest.”

Beyond the games and food, RECtravaganza created a space for connection. Students had the chance to meet campus organizations, design tote bags and perform in front of their peers, making the evening just as social as it was active.

“Seeing the different organizations come out shows us that they are here for us,” junior Maddie Olivarez said. “Even if you’re not into doing things outside, things such as yard games and the show, are fun.”

Hernandez hopes the event inspires students to take full advantage of the resources available at TAMUK. Resources that support not only education, but also personal growth through social and physical activities.
