Roberts takes over as Editor-In-Chief
With a new semester comes a new team of leadership at The South Texan.
The new Editor-In-Chief is Matthew Roberts, who after interviews and careful consideration built his team. The editorial staff consists of Lavelle Barrera, managing editor; Israel Espinoza is campus editor; Kade Murdoch is the sports editor; Daphney Pena is features editor; and Selena Ortiz has retained her role as entertainment editor.
“I’m very proud of what this staff has accomplished already with this current issue of the paper, I chose the individuals I did for a reason and I feel that they are best fit to serve Javelina Nation in the roles they have been assigned. I am also quite excited to take over as Editor-In-Chief, as it is a role I have had my eyes on since I arrived at The South Texan three years ago,” Roberts said.
The role of managing editor is an important one as it is instrumental in constructing a well-designed and thought-out news product.
“To be part of The South Texan is not only a dream, but is like being part of a second family. In my first semester as a voluntary reporter, the editors taught me so much and helped to become confident enough to apply for Managing Editor,” Barrera said. “As an editor, I make sure to put time and effort into affording new writers the same courtesy that I received when I first joined. Being a part of this amazing, and sometimes stressful environment has taught me new lessons every day. I cannot wait to learn more about reporting and leadership and how to build a deeper bond with the team.”
The role of The South Texan is to inform students on campus of happenings in their community and be their voice. This is why it is important that the editorial staff is built upon positive attitudes ready to work and learn.
“I’m so excited to be working at The South Texan this semester because it gives me the opportunity to gain experience in the writing world for when I graduate. Working here will help deepen my interest and understanding of writing. So after working my first official week I know that I’ll gain the experience and knowledge that I need for my future,” Espinoza said.
