RICHARDSON, Texas – Senior Rashon Thomas (Houston, Texas) claimed the first-ever Lone Star Conference Sixth Man of the Year award and joined three of his teammates on the All-LSC roster, which was released by the conference on Wednesday.
Thomas also garnered an All-LSC Second-Team selection, as did junior Tre Flowers (Bryan, Texas) and senior Chauncey Thomas (Plano, Texas) picked up an honorable mention spot. Sophomore Will Chayer (Corpus Christi, Texas) was placed on the LSC All-Academic team.
Thomas came off the bench in 27 of his team’s 28 games, but still found a way to lead the Hogs in scoring with 349 points for an average 12.9 per game, a stat that gets a boost up to 13.7 in league play. He’s buried 63 three-pointers as a senior, the seventh-most in a single season in program history and his 31 steals are also tied for the most on the club. Thomas has reached 20 points in four different games, with a season-high 26 in a 64-50 victory over Eastern New Mexico on Jan. 25th, and was only held out of double figures in consecutive games once all year.
Flowers has spent most of the year battling Rashon Thomas for the team lead in scoring and currently owns a mark of 12.0. No one on Estelle’s roster has hit more shots than the 125 Flowers has racked up in 2019-20 and his 56 treys have him closing in joining Thomas on in the single-season top 10 list in that category. Flowers has already made space for himself in the program record book, thanks to a spectacular performance on Nov. 30th against Texas A&M-Texarkana in which he tied a school best by hitting nine threes, matching a record set by Johnny Estelle in 1996. That effort led to the junior from Bryan collecting what would be the first of two LSC Offensive Player of the Week awards.
Chauncey Thomas has been one of the players tasked with running the show from the point guard spot and he’s showcased his talents by leading the Blue and Gold in assists for the second straight year. Thomas has passed out 91 dimes as a senior, the most by a Javelina since Ronald Scott has 100 in 2013-14. In his team’s regular season-closing win over Tarleton, he posted a new career-high with nine assists, helping the Hogs shoot a season-best 52.2 percent from beyond the arc. He also increased his contributions as a scorer late in the season, posting a scoring average of 10.0 over his team’s last 15 games.
The only player other than Chauncey Thomas and Tre Flowers to start every game for the Javs this season has been Chayer, who has led his team in rebounding and is tied for lead in blocked shots. He’s accomplished these things while maintaining a 3.70 ERA and pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
These Javelinas and the rest of Estelle’s bunch will open the postseason on Friday at the Lone Star Conference Tournament in Frisco, Texas, where they’ll play the Dallas Baptist Patriots at 12 p.m. Tickets will be available at the Comerica Center Box Office or through Ticketmaster. Single-session tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students (University students with valid school I.D. (any institution) or children ages 2-18). Fans can save $15 off the regular price for all-session passes and avoid fees by making an on-campus advance purchase. The all-session ticket grants access to all seven sessions at a reduced rate of $45. The all-session price increases to $60 for those not purchased through LSC schools by March 4.
