KINGSVILLE, Texas – The 2020 Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelina Cross Country Invitational is slated for Saturday, October 3, around the north part of campus with the women beginning at 5 p.m., followed by the men and 5:30 p.m. The Javelinas will take on Lone Star Conference opponent Texas A&M International along with Our Lady of the Lake.

The race will start at the south end of the practice field located next to Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium and will follow the assigned route through campus before returning for the second lap down Corral Avenue and N. Armstrong St. Both the men’s and women’s team will run two laps on the course with the women cutting midway through the original route up Retama Street back to Corral Ave. and returning to the finish line located on the track within the stadium limits.
Due to university policy, fans will not be allowed in the stadium for the duration of the race. Instead, those interested in attending are encouraged to set up in socially distant groups around the race path either along Corral Ave. or in the parking lots located next to McCulley Hall. Fans are strongly encouraged to remain at least six feet apart with masks on.
Additionally, portions of streets located around campus will be blocked off to traffic for the duration of the race. On the map, Seale St. will be blocked from Corral Ave. to Mesquite Grove on Avenue C, Retama St. will be cordoned off from Corral Ave. to the north entrance of the gates to Physical Plant, while University Blvd. will be restricted from Corral Ave. to the north end of the Student Recreation Center parking lot located next to Nolan Ryan Field.
The Javelinas opened their 2020 campaign last week on the road in Grand Prairie, Texas, at the Orville Rogers Opener hosted by Lone Star Conference foe DBU. Freshman Beyonce Hernandez (Portland, Texas) paced the women with a 22nd place finish in the 5k at 20:41.4, followed by classmate Melonie Thomas (Seguin, Texas) in 39th with a time of 21:49.
Rounding out the women’s race were two more freshmen in Cassandra Lozano (Kingsville, Texas) and Haley Villalpando (Weslaco, Texas) who finished 50th and 55th at 22:40.4 and 23:22.1, respectively.
For the men, senior David Tellez (Los Fresnos, Texas) completed the 8k portion of the race in 31:30.6 to finish 52nd, while junior Mikel Escobar (Ben Bolt, Texas) crossed the line in 32:18.1 to finish 58th.
Saturday’s race will feature an 8k route for the men and a 6k route for the women.
