Organization Members Predict a Successful Year
From being an undergraduate student at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) to becoming a student worker with the institution, Julianne Gomez returns to take on her new role at the university as Campus Activities Coordinator and Campus Activities Board (CAB) Advisor.
Gomez is a current graduate student working towards her Master of Interdisciplinary Studies and makes it her top priority to keep a school/work-life balance.
“During my undergraduate career, I was a student worker for student activities. I worked here at the office, did my schoolwork and at the same time balanced student teaching,” Gomez said. “It was like having two jobs, but I found a balance and applied that skill towards being the CAB Advisor and Campus Activities Coordinator.”
Gomez brings a new type of leadership and guidance to campus. Her role is vital to CAB and looked upon with high expectations.
“The expectation is to host events that students can enjoy and to make sure it’s the type of events they want to see,” Gomez said. “We’re also trying to improve the retention of CAB members and would also like to greatly improve participation at our events. I feel like students are ready to come back out into the open and get involved.”
CAB was recently under the direction of former Assistant Director of Student Activities Loreal Robertson. Since 2012, Robertson has hosted many events for the organization, but with Gomez now advising, it is a chance for new opportunities.
CAB Public Relations Coordinator Carmela Martínez anticipates what the group can gain from this new change in leadership.
“I think by having Julianne as our new advisor, I’m expecting a fresh start. I am hoping to change it up this year,” Martínez said. “We already had some awesome events and ideas lined up this school year but with the recent change, I think she will spice up our plans and the outcome for this year will be more than what CAB hoped for.”
Gomez offers a new point of view and CAB staff are excited to continue working with her. CAB Vice President Ysenia Granados hopes Gomez’s new role will benefit not just the organization but all student activities.
“We look forward to providing exciting, new events for students and getting innovative ideas for our organization,” Granados said. “I hope to gain a new perspective from Julianne and to see where we can improve for TAMUK students.”
Gomez looks forward to getting the ball rolling on more student activities and is excited to see what CAB can bring to campus in the coming year.
