Win season opener, 60-0
The Javelinas dominated the Stallions in the season opener at Pepsi Field Javelina Stadium Saturday in an explosion of offensive power and a shutdown defense, winning 60-0.
In the first quarter, the Javelinas started off receiving the football which was returned to the 50-yard line. With short field position, quarterback Jacob Cavazos completed a 14-yard pass to Jason Gaines on a 2nd-and-14 to bring up a new set of downs.
On 3rd-and-2, Cavazos took matters into his own hands and ran the ball 33 yards to put the Javelinas on the board first, 7-0, after the extra point was good.
On the defensive side, Amos Coleman picked off Stallions’ quarterback Randal Moore to put the Javelina offense in prime scoring position.
Christian Anderson would run the ball for 12 yards into the endzone to bring the score to 14-0.
The Javelina defense held North American, forcing a punt. The next Javelina drive, mixed with short passes and minimal yards gained on the run, was capped off by a 27-yard pass from Cavazos to JT Mackey for a touchdown which brought the score up to 21-0. Down big in the first quarter the Stallions tried to rally their offense together in hopes of getting on the board, but the TAMUK defense was not having any of it and shortly after getting to the 44-yard line in TAMUK territory Cory McMahan intercepted the ball.
After a few empty possessions by both teams, the score remained at 21-0. The TAMUK defense was pushed all the way back to their own 16-yard line but refused the Stallions, who attempted a field goal that was no good.
With the offense already on fire, the Javelinas picked up right where they left off in the first quarter and drove down the field with relative ease in the second, with the biggest play being a reception by Jason Gaines for 36 yards. This led to a one yard run by Anderson into the endzone and after a two-point conversion, the score went up to 29-0. After tacking on a touchdown and a field goal by Gilbert Garza for good measure the score halftime was 39-0.
It became very clear that the Javelinas showed no sign at slowing down and in the second half it proved to be correct. The offense stayed on course with what they did in the first and the defense continued to show that they would bend but not break, refusing to allow the Stallions to get close to scoring position throughout the second half. The Javelina offense scored 21 more points in the third quarter before beginning to coast through the fourth quarter. The final score was 60-0. The Javelinas amassed a total 585 offensive yards.
