IMDB ratings say otherwise
The movie Blonde is a naturalistic portrayal of the life of Marilyn Monroe. The character is played by the Cuban and Spanish actress Ana De Armas. The movie was released on Sept. 16. The Netflix movie is directed by Andrew Dominik. The Blonde crew also had Academy Award winners Brad Pitt as one of the producers and Adrien Brody who played “The Playwright.”
This movie was highly anticipated for two years. Monroe had one of the most controversial climbs to the spotlight. The actor who played the character, De Armas was one of the highest-paid female actors in 2021. She is one of those actors who keeps the audience on their toes with their performance. As a film buff, I am always curious to see what project she is going to take up next.
She is a versatile actress. De Armas has played the role of a poor and nervous maid (Knives Out) to a Bond girl (No Time to Die). When she was cast for the role of Monroe, I wasn’t too sure how I felt about it and if she would be able to pull it off because De Armas naturally had a thick accent and did not exactly look like the star she was portraying. Also, the fact that Monroe had a very complicated life and there was a lot of ground to cover with not much time as Netflix original movies only have a time limit of two hours.
The movie had brilliant cinematography and detail. It really focused on marketing De Armas as an accurate copy of Monroe and it was well achieved to my surprise. De Armas’s character had Monroe’s perfect blonde curls and her imperfect mole placed perfectly above her lips. The production made a smart move by using a combination of black and white film and color film.
Unfortunately, the movie did not do very well in ratings. It is mainly because of the absence of a plot. The movie was not supposed to be a biopic, but it was supposed to tell a story. The movie Blonde was artistically pleasing but lacked storytelling. It was cramped with traumatic events of Monroe’s life and was a series of one traumatic event to the other without letting the story flow. It was rushed. I would rate the movie a 6/10.
