Student media starts semester welcoming new staff members
The start of a new year brings many changes, including the student media organizations on campus. The South Texan and KTAI welcome new and returning faces to the student and administrative staff to the Javelina Media Experience.
KTAI added three new student staff members, Adan Botello the Student Radio Station Manager and Assistant Managers Joshua Garcia and Bryan Godines.
“My favorite part of working as the student station manager is learning about all these new things. I love music, and working at the radio station has allowed me to gain more knowledge relating to this field,” Botello said.
Garcia and Godines are also hosts to the radio show If You’re Walking, You’re Wrong, which airs every Monday at 5 p.m.
The South Texan welcomed four new editors and a Senior Reporter to its student staff. Melissa Mata as Managing Editor, Laryssa Salinas as Campus Editor, Zena DeSouza and Chris Olivarez as Co-Sports Editors and Abigayle Hayden as Senior Reporter.
“I am so happy to be able to work closely with all our editors and reporters, to hear all their new ideas they have and get to see first-hand their amazing journalism skills,” Mata said.
She also looks forward to meeting new and interesting people, and the opportunity to share their stories.
New positions on student staff include Assistant Digital Editor Dominic Valdez and photographer Mireya Martinez.
Returning to the student staff in a new position is Dylan Sanchez, who now serves as the Opinion Editor for The South Texan. Ronni Reyna will continue to serve as Editor-in-Chief, Frank Villarreal as Entertainment Editor and Erik Estrada as Digital Editor.
The student media is overseen by Assistant Professor of Practice, Chief Radio Operator and Student Media Adviser Nicole Morris. A new Assistant General Manager of Student Media has also been added to the team, Aryssa Enriquez.
“I most look forward to helping our student media program grow,” Enriquez said.
Enriquez, the former Editor-in-Chief of The South Texan, obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the university.
“The South Texan is filled with opportunities for growth. As a former student, The South Texan taught me invaluable skills that not only reflect in my work but in my personal life. I’m excited to be back and be able to give back to the community that has given me so much,” she said. Students interested in becoming a part of the Javelina Media Experience can visit us in Manning Hall, Room 165.
