Annual Children’s Show is Feb. 19-21
The Texas A&M University Kingsville (TAMUK) Theatre will be performing the annual Children’s Show at 6:30 p.m., Feb. 19 to 21 at the Jones Auditorium. Admission price is $2 a ticket.
This year’s play is an original story titled “Rapunzel, Meet Little Red Riding Hood” in which the titular characters meet one another after two of the story’s narrators accidentally fuse the two stories. Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel will meet new faces, both good and evil, on their journey to Red’s grandmother’s house.
This year’s story has been written and is being directed by TAMUK Theatre student Nadia Hernandez. The show promises an interesting take on the Rapunzel and Red Riding Hood stories by merging them and making the two protagonists partake in each other’s story.
“It’s very interesting but also exciting for the first time,” Hernandez, director and writer, says. “Feels unreal, almost magical I’d say. I’m glad to finally be doing something for a large audience.”
This annual show gives the university theatre students a chance to practice their variety of skills and put on a show more directly aimed at younger crowds as a way to entertain them while also showing them the world of performing arts.
Gauge Roberts, an actor playing the character Narra, said, “The Children’s Show every year is an exhausting and difficult process, but when you get to the show dates, it’s really fulfilling.”
The actors and crew have been hard at work rehearsing and making sure everything sounds and looks good for the upcoming show. The Children’s Show happens once a year, so they want to it to be the best it can be for the audience.
“It’s just awesome to hear the kids enjoy the show and theater.” Robin Machuca, technical director for the play, said. “It can be tiresome from an actor’s perspective, but it’s good be able to bring joy; especially these days.”
