A new spin on a favorite superhero
It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s on Adult Swim? Over the course of 10 episodes, Season 1 of “My Adventures with Superman” (MAWS) has finally wrapped. With season 2 in the works, does MAWS live up to the hype? If you don’t get the intro or you just don’t remember cable, “My Adventures with Superman” aired weekly on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, CN’s nighttime, adult-oriented programming block.
This was announced early on, though to mixed reception. The show had seemed very family-friendly so far, so why was it airing on Adult Swim of all places? I’m not so sure it really matters. At the end of the day, animation is a medium for storytelling like any other.
If anything, I see that timeslot as an opportunity for more mature plots should the writers feel like that’s where they want the series to go. After watching this first season, I think that was a good decision.
Please go watch this show. For your own sake. It’s so fun. Whether you’re a fan of Superman, comics, DC as a whole, animation, sitcoms, action, this show has something for you. I cannot recommend this enough.
The first season follows a young Clark Kent, his roommate Jimmy Olsen, and an evereager Lois Lane as they all begin interning at the Daily Planet. All the while, Clark struggles to keep his powers a secret as he comes to terms with the inherent responsibility he feels to the citizens of Metropolis and the world.
This show is such a fresh take on the character and world of Superman, but it doesn’t stop there. More notable villains like Parasite and Livewire get some major, yet faithful, overhauls. Certain characters that aren’t even Superman originals make an appearance, but I’ll let you experience those if you haven’t already.
As a life-long DC fan, the fact that this has become one of my new favorite takes on the character says a lot. I thought back to Superman and Lois multiple times while watching and I’d say that’s a step in the right direction.
I think we’re in the renaissance of classic Superman and I’m glad to be here for it.
