Angelo State gets the better of TAMUK 35-16
Going into this game, the 4-1 javelinas looked to turn the tide in their rivalry against the Angelo State Rams. Early in the first quarter it seemed as though the javelina defense would be the wow factor to this game as the offense had struggled to move the ball outside of one possession that resulted in a field goal, which would give TAMUK a 3-0 lead in the second quarter.
However, the defense could only do so much as the Rams quickly began to get their offense together and would score the first touchdown of the game bringing the score to 7-3 shortly before halftime. The javelinas quickly pieced together a drive near the end of the first half of the game, but it stalled out on the cusp of field goal range.
The javelinas kicker Gilbert Garza did his best, knocking the ball between the uprights to make the score 7-6 and bring the javelinas back within a point at the half. The Rams would then receive the ball to start the third quarter and on one play they would score a touchdown to increase their lead to 14-6, stunning the home crowd. The Javelinas looked to answer back but unfortunately it was not to be as miscues and penalties derailed drives the could’ve resulted in points. This allowed the Rams to score another touchdown.
The bright spot through this quarter was once again Gilbert Garza who would tack on another field goal to make the score 35-9 going into the fourth quarter of the game. To start off the last quarter of the game, the Javelinas found themselves in the red zone where, after a few attempts, they would cross the goal line and score their first touchdown of the game bringing the score to 35-16.
Unfortunately, ASU began to shift their game plan to a more time-consuming offense as they looked to run out the clock as much as possible while kicking a field goal to make it a 38-16 score. After this and another turnover by the Javelina offense, the ASU Rams would run out the final minutes of this game closing it out with a win over the Javelinas. Now at 4-2 the Javelinas will be looking to rebound from this loss as they look ahead to Eastern New Mexico on Oct. 21 in Portales, NM.
