Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) Intramural soccer season concluded last week with five teams winning championships in their respective leagues. The highlight of the season was when “Las Chicas” defeated “Team Segura” by a score of 5-2 in the first Women’s League Championship in program history.
Prior to Fall 2018, there were only four leagues, Men’s Blue, Men’s Gold, Co-Ed Blue & Co-Ed Gold. This semester was finally able to get enough willing participants to start an all-women’s league.
Assistant Director of Intramural Sports Carlos Diaz has been trying to get this league started for a while and the opportunity finally came into fruition this semester.
“We’ve been trying to start up a women’s league for some time now……it’s hard to find ladies that really want to play,” Diaz said.
It was a proud day for “Las Chicas” especially captain Krystal Cepeda, who was nearly overwhelmed with joy as she fought hard to hold the tears back.
“I felt proud of my team for sure. I was shocked that our chemistry was so good and some of us barely just met…It’s exciting to be the first ever women’s soccer champs at TAMUK,” Cepeda said.
She also went on to encourage other women to participate in the sport.
“For other women that haven’t tried…I’d definitely say they’re missing out on a great college experience. We may get a little competitive but…it’s all fun and games literally. You make new friends and of course get to enjoy the game of soccer,” she said.
Longtime friends and “Las Chicas” strikers Alexis Zepeda and Meagan Trevino were enjoying the night as well as they won two championships including the Inaugural Women’s League title in their first semester at TAMUK.
“I truly did like it a lot. I met a bunch of people [whom] all like to play soccer and we all got together for the win. I’m very excited for next season now,” Trevino said.
Zepeda also went on about her experience this semester.
“Soccer is probably the biggest thing that I’ve missed doing since high school. It was nice that I was able to play it again, specifically with girls that were just as competitive as me,” she said. “I’m glad I met all the girls that I did while playing. It was a fun season and Team ‘Las Chicas’ will be back and better next year.”
