Chess is known to be one of the most strategic and critical board games of all time. Unfortunately, with new technology the art of playing chess has been slowly declining throughout the years. However, the Javelina Chess Club is determined to keep the art alive and teach students tactical skills that will help them be successful in a game of chess.
“We are open to all types of members with knowledge and no knowledge of the critical thinking game. Our purpose as a club is to groom chess players and teach them strategic ways that will not only enhance their critical thinking skills, but will enhance their ability to always think one step ahead,” said Alberto Taboada, a Biomedical major.
The Javelina Chess Club was founded to promote an environment in which students would be offered the idea to learn, instruct and discuss chess.
Members of the Javelina Chess Club often compete online and peer-review each other’s game to strive for improvement.
Analyzing a chess game may enhance your strategic moves and provide an open-mind when facing your opponent.
“Chess has allowed me to think outside the box and allows me to challenge my logic. Logic should be the most important basis of anyone to be taken seriously. The Javelina Chess Club has also allowed me to experience a sense of community who cherishes a dying game with a common goal of winning,” said Roland Montemayor, a Chemical Engineering major.
Aside from keeping the art of chess alive, the chess club has provided students the ability to distract themselves and initiate close friendships.
“I enjoy playing chess because it helps me think more clearly, and it helps alleviate great stress. The Javelina Chess Club has enhanced my experience by its sibling-like atmosphere and it reminds me of home,” said Stefani Reta, an Animal Science major.
