Back-to-back series win for the Javelinas.
It has been a jam-packed week for the Javelina baseball team with competition going from Sunday to Sunday.
The team kicked off the season opener against Texas A&M International in Laredo, Texas after a string of games and series were canceled due to COVID-19 and a devastating snowstorm that impacted the southern region of the country.
The series started with a loss against the Dust Devils, but was followed by back-to-back victories, giving a series win to the Javelinas.
After the series Head Coach Jason Gonzales caught up with Javelina Athletics to discuss the series victory.
“I’m proud of the team for being able to win a series on the road after losing the first game,” Gonzales told Javelina Athletics. “They showed a lot of toughness to overcome two different deficits today.”
The definitive point in the final game of the series that put it away was by Giancarlo Servin, who sent a three-run shot to left field in the top of the eighth.
“It was great to be back on the field again. I was excited to compete and had a great weekend with my teammates and coaches. I enjoyed it a lot and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season,” Servin said.
The next series was against Arkansas-Fort Smith at Nolan Ryan Field where the Javelinas started off with a good team win on Friday, picking up a 7-1 victory with a great performance from Kolby Lunsford.
The next day started with a 13-1 loss to the Lions, but game three went to the Javelinas in a pitching duel through the first five innings as neither side made head- way on the bases.
Pitcher Logan Garza sat down six of the seven leadoff batters he faced on the day and had multiple strikeouts in five of his seven innings of work.
“Honestly though going into the game I knew I had to throw a lot of strikes,” Garza said. “Our coaches were stressing getting ahead of guys, and I just wanted to give our team a chance to win. My catcher Caleb Nash called a great game and my pitching coach, Coach Flores, gave us a great game plan. The guys made a lot of plays behind me. We had Austin DeLeon catch a deep fly ball that I thought was going to fall for a hit and Giancarlo Servin caught a tough pop up behind the mound late in the game. There are more plays I could go on about, but I know what this team can do when we’re all on. I just knew it was a matter of time before our offense went off and I was confident our team would make plays behind me. I’m just glad I could do my parton the mound.”
The series win marksthe second series won by the team. The next series is March 5 against Okla- homa Christian in Okla- homa City.
