Javelina football games are making a return and ready for full capacity after a very short season last year due to COVID. Last year, the Javelinas football season consisted of two games total and was limited to only 100 people. Everything has changed now, and campus is ready for some Javelina football, especially team members.
“As far as not having actual college football for a long time with fans here and a fighting tradition…we are excited as a team,” Craig Clemons, a wide receiver for the Javelinas, said.
It is not just football players who are excited about a “normal” season. The cheerleading squad is as well.
“Last season no one really got to experience a normal season of college football,” Mireya Lopez, a Javelina cheerleader, said.
There was nothing that could be done during this tough time except follow COVID protocols and wait it out.
“Even though we couldn’t have a regular season we did make the best out of it. We still made sure to show our support,” Jasmine Harris, another Javelina cheerleader, said.
Everyone at Javelina nation is expecting a normal college football season since the decision was made to allow full capacity.
Football season has always been something to look forward to, and students and players alike are ready to get back to their college football traditions for the first home game.
“I’m expecting to experience a normal college football game with tailgate, more people being in the stands, and Saturday Night Lights,” Lopez said.
The players are expecting a big crowd of fans to cheer them on.
“We expect a lot of fans here at Javelina Stadium for the first home game of the season and we are ready to play and put good product on the field for a great home crowd,” Clemons said.
The first home game is set to take place at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 11.
