Jamaican native LSC champ
Last weekend, the Javelina Track and Field team competed in the 2022 Lone Star Conference (LSC) Indoor meet in Lubbock, Texas. Senior D.J. Delancy from Bethel Town, Jamaica came out on top winning gold in the Men’s Shot Put and became a champion in the LSC with his winning throw at 17.34m (56-10.75).
“To be honest I didn’t feel anything, I wasn’t surprised because I was the No. 1 ranked shot putter going into the conference championship and I was expected to win it. I was leading the competition with my first throw…I wasn’t surprised…I was grateful…I was happy that I won it…but I wasn’t surprised,” Delancy said.
Moving forward the team plan to keep this same winning intensity going into the outdoor season.
“We’re trying to make it to the National Outdoor Championships, so I guess we’ll taper down and reduce workload and start increasing the intensity…we’ll improve the intensity, decrease the workload, and sharpen up on the technique and see what needs to be finetuned… and just start hitting the ball harder,” Delancy said.
Head Track Coach Ryan Dall and Throws Coach Ryan Petrocchi felt great about the outcome for both their runners and throwers.
“Overall, as a team we had a very good meet…our athletes performed well as a whole, and they prepared well…they competed hard, really left it on the track. I was excited with the results and the way everyone competed…seeing an athlete having a personal best or season best…as a coach it really makes you feel good and knowing that you timed the training well to where everyone was ready to do their best…it was exciting watching them compete and fun, I was proud of the way they all performed,” Dall said.
Throws coach Petrocchi and his throwers had their hearts out on this great jump start and kept their eye on the winning goal.
“I feel obviously great for them, that’s what I came here for. To push those guys and girls to do their best in the weight room with their form and we’ve had this goal from day one so it wasn’t a matter of how it was going to happen…it was a matter of when for these guys because we’ve honestly pushed it hard and we’ve had our eyes on this prize for a while now and to finally see it come to passes it’s exciting for them,” Petrocchi said.
The Javelinas are ready for the outdoor season.
“Indoor was awesome, we had great experiences it was just an upward climb for all our athletes on the throwing side, running side and jumping side…now we’ve had that great jumping off point it’s just time to keep building for that final chapter for outdoor. They’re excited and I’m excited…we’re ready for it to be here,” Petrocchi said.
