Event is March 30
The Campus Activities Board (CAB) organization at Texas A&M University – Kingsville (TAMUK) is bringing back the annual Spring Fling event at 5 p.m., Wednesday, March 30, on University Boulevard.
“Spring Fling is an annual event alongside Fall Carnival that gives approved student organizations an opportunity to fundraise for any events, conferences or supplies they may need for that semester,” Campus Activities Coordinator, Julianne Gomez said.
Gomez explained that organizations in attendance are given the choice to sell one food or drink item, host an activity such as games or just be an informational booth.
They set up their booths all around University Boulevard, and students get to walk around and support organizations by purchasing different items.
Spring Fling also offers an opportunity for organizations to recruit.
“Spring Fling is not only an important fundraising opportunity, it also gives students (who) are not in any to see what else TAMUK has to offer,” sophomore Isaiah Cole said. “Being a music major, we are very secluded to one side of the campus, so it is very interesting to see other organizations trying to grow their field of study.”
Cole is a member of the South Texas Saxophone Association (STSA). He stated that this year, STSA will be selling chicken street tacos. With the money, STSA plans to purchase a bass saxophone and fundraise for upcoming events.
Other organizations like the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers plan to sell mangonadas to fundraise for anything members may need and upcoming social events.
“Events like this allow for students to interact with each other and take a break during stressful times like midterms,” senior and member of SHPE Maricarmen Martinez said.
Lilly Baird, president of the Criminal Justice Club, explained that the club is selling tornado potatoes at the event. They are fundraising for future on-campus events, but a big portion is going to their banquet hall that will be held in April.
Not only does this event help different organizations fundraise, it also gives students on campus a chance to see the most active organizations and opportunities they have to offer.
“One thing I love about this event is that it invites our Kingsville community to celebrate and have a good night while also supporting student organizations,” Gomez said. “Sometimes, it even gives an opportunity for some organizations’ alumni to come back and get an update on how their organization is doing and reminisce over the good ole days and their time at TAMUK.”
Besides the student-led booths, CAB will bring out the Javelina inflatable chair, a live band from Corpus Christi, a photo box with free prints, and an inflatable bounce.
“With everything that is going on in the world, I am hoping that we can give students and the community a chance to relax and enjoy their time with family and friends while supporting student organizations,” Gomez said. “Don’t be afraid to eat some food, tasty desserts, delicious drinks and play games.”
