Wollenzien takes the tennis team on the road
The Lady Hogs on the tennis court went on a long road trip this past week which took them through Oklahoma in a loss to Cameron University and ending in a matchup between the Javelinas and the Lions of Arkansas-Fort Smith.
In the final regular-season trip on the 2022 season, the team ended with a 6-1 victory over the Lions on Saturday which now puts the conference record for Head Coach Autumn Wollenzien and her women’s team at 3-3 with an overall record of 8-9 with three more scheduled contests to go.
“It was definitely a tough loss versus Cameron,” Coach Wollenzien said, “but what was important for the ladies was to be able to move on to the next day.”
The Javelinas took two of the three doubles matches. Alessa Maier from Hechingen, Germany, and Manuela Turolo from Cividale del Friuli, Italy, took the second match of the day with a 6-2 victory. The two have won a team-high nine matches together and followed by that was a 6-4 victory by Milou ter Morsche of Goor, Neatherlands, and Noemi Sante from Dusseldorf, Germany.
“The match against the Lions felt good despite the long road trip,” Morsche said. “We made sure we got enough rest and that we were ready to play.”
The first point from the singles matches came from Morsche who has won her eighth match out of the last 10. She dominated the No. 4 match 6-1, 6-0. She along with Maier have combined for 11 victories up to this point in the season, the highest recorded since 2021.
Match No. 3 belonged to Raina Zaffar from Guwahati, India. She won her matches 6-3 and 6-4. Matches five and six were also brought home by Turolo and Viktoriia Grigoreva from Tver, Russia.
“It was a tough 6-3, 6-4 win,” Zaffar said. “I was happy to come back home with a 6-1 win.”
The last three matchups will be at home starting with a match against UT Tyler.
