CAB kicks off the year with roller-skating event
A line of students wrapped around the Memorial Student Union Building (MSUB) ballrooms as students waited to enter the Rockin’ Roller Rave event hosted by Campus Activities Board (CAB) on Wednesday, Aug. 24.
“[Rockin’ Roller Rave] is a roller-skating event that we host to kick off the fall semester,” Executive Director of CAB Carmela Martinez said. “It is something that everyone looks forward to and I feel like we had a good turnout. Everyone is having fun.”
The purpose of this event was to give students of all classifications an opportunity to spend time with friends, meet new people and to enjoy their night, all while they skate around the ballrooms.
“This an event that [some] students may never get to do in their entire life,” Campus Activities Coordinator Julianne Gomez said. “I do not know of a skating rink near Kingsville or in Corpus Christi. Bringing this vendor to our university gives students an opportunity to have fun, free of charge.”
Upon arrival, students scanned a QR code and signed a liability waiver. After signing, they were given a waiver bracelet and were directed to a skate check where they received a skating bracelet.
Once the students had everything they needed, they were free to skate and indulge in the food and drinks that were provided.
Gomez and Martinez both explained that Rockin’ Roller Rave is always the first event of the fall semester because it is one that guarantees a positive turnout.
“I was really excited about college, meeting new people and having fun so I brought all my friends with me tonight,” freshman Adrian Rios said.
Rios heard about this event through social media and decided to attend as he knew it would be a memorable one.
“I got to hang out with my current friends and make new friends. I also got to listen to good music while I skated. Overall, I had a great time,” Rios said.
While roller-skating may be a fun event for some, it is the type of event that requires safety precautions.
The liability waiver that students signed when they first arrived was to let them know CAB was not responsible for any accident that could happen.
However, in case of one, students’ medical expenses are covered if they do not have medical insurance.
Another way CAB ensured safety was by having members patrol the ballrooms in case anyone needed help, whether it was to skate or to get from one place to another.
Not only was this CAB’s first event of the semester, but it was also Martinez’s first event as Executive Director.
“I feel good. We created new positions and restructured CAB so we could have certain responsibilities delegated to certain individuals. We also created committees; I am excited to oversee everyone,” Martinez said. “This is my first time doing anything like this. It is a little weird for me, but I am excited. We will see how it goes as the semester rolls.”
Martinez expects to have a successful semester and hopes that more students across campus know what CAB is.
More on-campus activities are to be anticipated as the semester progresses.
