WEEK 2 RECAP

In the second game of the 2022 Javelina Football season on Saturday, TAMUK took on Sul Ross and earned their second win of the season, 35-14.

In the early stages of the game, it seemed to be a much more balanced game than last week’s previous lopsided victory over North American.

This time the Javelinas met their match and both teams hit each other with some big blows early on. It became clear the deciding factor was not either team’s offense, but which defense gave their respective offense the most opportunities.

The Javelinas scored first taking a 7-0 lead which then resulted in a repetition of empty drives and turnovers.

The Javelinas turned the ball over three times, all three being fumbles, which would result in the defense having to come back out and do what they do best.

After a blocked punt and a safety led to the score being 9-0, the Javelina defense gave up their first touchdown of both the game and the season.

Neither offense could get anything going after the score settled at 9-7 until the Javelinas marched down the field nearing the end of the first half to kick a field goal and make the game 12-7 thanks to the leg of Gilbert Garza.

At the start of the second half, it became clear that the defense had not skipped a beat and only seemed to get better as the night went on. The Javelinas tacked on yet another blocked punt that resulted in another safety, making it a 14-7 ball game.

The Sul Ross Lobos offense had no answers for the defense as the opposing quarterback was pressured multiples times which resulted in incompletions or near interceptions. The Javelina offense would capitalize on these opportunities given to them by their defense to make the score 21-7 going into the fourth quarter. In the beginning of the final quarter, Javelina running back Christian Anderson would run it in for TAMUK making the score 28-7. After a punt by Sul Ross, the Javelina offense went right back to work driving down the field and allowing Roger Hagan to score the final touchdown of the night for the Javelinas.

Sul Ross would eventually drive down the field and score to make it 35-14 but after a failed attempt at an onside kick, the Javelinas ran the clock down to advance to 2-0 on the season.

The Javelinas amassed 426 total yards on the night.  Craig Clemons was a standout on the night, returning to kickoffs for a total of 83 yards. QB Jacob Cavazos went 25-37 for 233 passing yards.
