Guides team to 7th win
The Javelinas continue their winning ways as they defeated University of Texas-Permian Basin (UTPB) in a very close game, 13-10, Saturday, Oct. 15.
Early on both offenses struggled against the defenses who played on an elite level tonight. The Javelinas were first to score as they took advantage of a botched punt return which set them up with great field position. Unfortunately, the offense could not get into the endzone and relied on kicker Gilbert Garza to deliver the first points of the game with a field goal to make the score 3-0.
As both teams battled it out in the first two quarters, it seemed as though neither team could score a touchdown until UTPB managed to break through that Javelina defense making the score 7-3 at the half.
Once again, the Javelinas were down at the half in a very close ball game. Up to that point it was clear it would be a low scoring and defensive battle which was proven to be correct by the statistics shared at halftime. Neither offense could get anything going and when they did it was short lived.
In the third quarter it looked the same as the two previous quarters; time consuming drives and little to no points to show for it. The defense gave the offense chances to score but they were unable to as UTPB’s defense matched up well.
When the UTPB Falcons went up 10-3 it seemed as though the Javelinas would see our first loss of the year, but the team refused to let that happen.
Early in the fourth quarter, quarterback Jacob Cavazos connected with Jason Gaines and Christian Anderson to march the Javelina offense down the field and get another field goal to make the score 10-6. Once that was done, it was up to the defense who did not give the Falcons any sort of room as they quickly crushed the drive and forced a punt.
On offense, penalties killed their drive as the Javelinas were forced to punt once again. In poetic fashion however, the defense found a way to bring hope back to Javelina nation as defensive back Jeff Lavarin intercepted the ball late in the fourth quarter, giving the offense a prime chance to go down the field and take the lead. After a few short passes, Cavazos connected with Anderson to move the ball into the redzone. On first down on the Falcons 19-yard line, Cavazos threw the ball into the endzone and into the hands of wide receiver Craig Clemons, who would hold on for the touchdown, and after an extra point attempt by Garza, the Javelinas took a 13-10 lead and ultimately won the game.
