Smoothie King opens near campus
The high-speed motor of the blender began grinding with power as people slurped on their smoothies in anticipation while waiting for the grand opening events to begin. Just at the end of University Boulevard sits the first Smoothie King in Kingsville, and on Thursday, March 2, held a grand opening that involved free samples, door prizes and a raffle.
Smoothie King opened on Feb. 4, making this the fifth store to open for owner Joe Perez.
Smoothie King representatives’ main focus is bringing a healthier lifestyle to Kingsville and to the students at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK).
The smoothe joint is known for a blend of either fruits, vegetables and enhancers that can be combined to fuel a healthy lifestyle for the consumer.
“[The Kingsville community is] very supportive of local business and we found that coming in here and building a Smoothie King would not only help benefit the students and the athletes at the university since we’re so close by, but to also to help engage and encourage the local residents here to live a healthy and active lifestyle, so we have a healthy option here for them,” Marketing Director Jessica Salinas said.
Salinas mentions that smoothies can also come with enhancers. These enhancers help students with things such as keeping your mind focused for big test, a grab and go drink that’s a quick easy and healthier option to say fast food.
She also mentions that there will be many events to come in the future for students to get more familiar with Smoothie King.
“As students y’all stay busy, y’all don’t have a lot of time to eat. What this is going to do is give y’all the opportunity to get the proper nutrition to get y’all through the day as well, not only physical but mentally. We have good fats that are going to be healthy for the brain function and everything like that, studying, and a little bit of natural energy and things along those lines,” Donovon Villarreal, store manager, said.
Track and field senior Jezell Shows expressed how exciting it is for Smoothie King to be open so close to campus.
“It’s amazing especially because there are so many athletes here and usually we try making our own smoothies, but now that we have Smoothie King literally down the road, it’s perfect before practice and after practice,” he said.
On March 2, Smoothie King announced its partnership with TAMUK Athletics, making them the official Nutritional Sponsor.
Smoothie King is located at 100 University Boulevard.
