Javelinas get their season rolling
Starting off the season 0-4 did not look good for the Javelinas and while others may feel discouraged and let this get to them, that was not the case for the Javelina baseball team.
After losing to St. Edwards, the team went back to work to prepare themselves for the series against West Texas A&M. Unfortunately for West Texas, they did not know what was heading their way.
The Javelinas went out to Canyon, Texas, and bounced back from their first game going 3-1 in the series.
With a fire under them, the Javelinas took down Texas A&M International in a close scoring game.
Now the Javelinas were sitting at a record of 4-5 as they headed into their game series against Eastern New Mexico.
They would once again go 3-1 in the series as well as having a game cut short because of a significant lead. After another 3-1 record in their series against Cameron, the Javelinas found themselves with a record of 10-8 through 18 games.
“The biggest takeaway from this is the momentum we are building as a team moving forward,”
Catcher Nick Wolff said. “Although we have played well over the last few weekends, the only thing we have learned is the right to work even harder moving forward.”
They refused to let the early losses as well as a few scattered throughout the early part of the sea- son derail their efforts in showing they are the best. The baseball team feel like the tide has turned and they are continuing to look ahead.
“The series wins against Cameron and Eastern [New Mexico] definitely boosted the team’s overall confidence and gives us momentum going forward into playing UTPB [University of Texas-Permian Basin] dropping four in opening weekend definitely hurt but if we can keep winning series we’ll be right back in the hunt,”
left-handed pitcher Matthew Sesler said.
“We have a group of players that handle adversity very well, and that goes back to the Pack training that these guys go through in the offseason,” Head Coach Jason Gonzales said.
The baseball team is a great example that hard work and determination pay off.
“We would much rather have a group of guys that can overcome adversity instead of just playing well when things are going well. The most important thing you will ever have to do in your life is respond, and these guys certainly know how to do that,” Coach Gonzales added.
The Javelina baseball team looks ahead as they gear to hit the road again to take on UT-Tyler in Tyler, Texas, March 10-12.
