Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) continues to celebrate Hispanic Heritage with a series of events.
For the month of September and weeks of October, TAMUK has planned events for students to become aware of the Hispanic culture and have a chance for them to learn about why people celebrate.
From cultural performances to educational workshops, TAMUK’s Student Engagement and Campus Life (SECL) hosted the Hispanic Heritage Kickoff Event featuring Mariachi Javelina, student organizations and a food truck providing students a chicken quesadilla with rice and salsa.
Marina Gerragauch, student engagement coordinator for the Javelina engagement center, said she was pleased with the outcome for the Hispanic Heritage Kickoff. Gerragauch said that SECL had organized the shirts and the meals for students.
“Eating the food, hearing the music, it made me happy. It reminded me of Mexico,” Jesus Vargas, student of TAMUK, said.
The Hispanic Heritage Kickoff also offered workshops at which students were able to learn how to make salsa and paper flowers. Tables that offered students a chance to be able to travel to Mexico were also presented.
“We want them to come in and enjoy a lot of the events happening here on campus so they can become engaged, as well as learn more about their heritage,” Miguel Briseño, student assessment coordinator for the Center for Student Success, said.
