Students win big prizes
Texas A&M University Kingsville’s (TAMUK) Student Engagement and Campus Life (SECL) hosted a Loteria Night on Sept. 29, at the Student Memorial Union Building.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month SECL organized Loteria Night to encourage students to learn more about Hispanic culture.
“I’m interested in participating in the cultural aspect and making sure we celebrate our Latino heritage on campus, because we are a Latino serving institution. I just want to have fun… and relax outside of academics,” Student Leslie Cariaga said.
Loteria is a popular board game in Mexico, it is similar to bingo but instead of numbers there are characters and objects. Families gather to play, create memories and it can often get competitive.
“[My family] always hangs out from time to time, we meet up and have random prizes or whoever wins has to [bring] food for everyone,” Volunteer Rolando Garcia said.
SECL advertised Loteria Night as an opportunity for students to bring out their friendly competitive side while enjoying food and prizes.
“I have always loved playing loteria with my family. I learned about this event through all the advertisements on campus especially the big poster in Lucio Hall. I saw the poster and knew I wanted to take part in this event,” Student Brian Briones said.
Students mentioned how they were excited to play loteria and enjoy the nacho bar.
“We offered loteria, we entered students in a giveaway for t-shirts, we had awesome prizes like speakers, and beats. We also provided food with our nacho bar, often times students don’t have the money to afford food, so when we can provide food for students, we really try our best to,” SECL student worker Pily Stevens said.
