Event is set to premiere music piece
The Javelina music program will perform at Jones Auditorium in an event called Super Flute in late April. This event will feature a parody version of W.A. Mozart’s “Magic Flute” with the theme being made up of classic video games from the 1980s including costumes and sets.
Though this event is labeled as an opera, it is meant to be more fun and lighthearted.
“What I don’t want is for people to be scared of the word opera and I feel that a lot of people see that word and think that it will be in a different language that not everyone can understand,” Director of this event Dr. Melinda Brou said. “This was originally written in German and it is probably one of the top 10 operas in the world to get produced, but this production has been updated to the realm of 1980s video games.”
Throughout the production of this opera in various parts of the world, the script saw many differences and changes. The script that will be used at Super Flute will be the updated script from a librettist by the name of Josh Shaw.
With this updated script, this will make Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) not only the first location in Texas to perform this opera, but the first location to perform this opera in the entire southern United States.
“It feels really fun knowing that the show has only been done one other way and we have the chance to produce original ideas into the material,” sophomore Hunter Wood said.
This will be a great opportunity for the students involved.
“Not only will this be great to put in your portfolio but it will also help you get the opera experience and what it takes to be an actual opera singer,” student and opera singer Skylar Delgado said. “During the beginning of the semester we are just learning the music and notes and figuring out the notes so that way we can have it all memorized by the time we get ready to set the stage.”
This looks to be an experience that many will never forget. For those interested in attending this opera it will take place on Friday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 23 at 3 p.m. in Jones Auditorium.
