Kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month

Even as the rain barreled down outside, TAMUK’s Student Engagement & Campus Life (SECL) kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations with food, fun and music inside the MSUB ballrooms on Sept.  16.

The Hispanic Heritage kickoff event aimed to bring in students to celebrate the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, a time in which the university holds a wide arrange of events and activities to highlight the extensive Hispanic culture of the university.

“It’s important for people to get familiar with the things that are involved with Hispanic Heritage Month, like what we cook and different traditions.” Vincent Ochoa, SECL’s Marketing Specialist said.

Mireya Alonzo was one student in attendance and she understood the need some students may have for representation during Hispanic Heritage Month.

“I think it’s important to emphasize the culture because there are so many students that are Hispanic and it helps them if they are far away from home feel closer to home,” Alonzo said.

Several events are expected to take place during Hispanic Heritage with the kickoff event only being the beginning of it all, giving students on campus a little more to look forward to this Hispanic Heritage Month.

“Being able to experience all the fun and camaraderie exhibited in the hispanic heritage event definitely got me pumped up for the rest  of the Hispanic Heritage events throughout this month. It’s an opportunity to express our deep love of our roots,” Political Science major Juan Reyes said.

“It’s an opportunity to honor where we came from, and our ancestors way of life,” Reyes said.
