Golf team on the rise

New beginnings ,new coaches, old records being snapped

The 2024-2025 fall season for the Javelina golf team has ridden its highs and lows, but its commitment to getting better every day has begun to pay off.

Under first year Head Coach Troy Lopez the team has started to play better and is already taking swings to decades’ old records.

Lopez knows that building a successful team overnight isn’t a realistic goal, but sees the team beginning to become successful in a lot of aspects of the game.

“The constant quest to keep improving is there and so is trying to implement a culture and a standard. It’s something that’s getting reached as we keep going through the duration of the season. But we’re starting with building blocks, and we’ll keep going forward,” Lopez said.

Lopez attributes the success this year to the players wanting to get better every single day and with everything they do.

“Being consistent and learning how to get the most out of the little things. Understanding that everything that we do has a bigger ending and goal to what it is. But if we can’t succeed at doing the little things right, then we’re not going to get to where we eventually want to. So, it’s really about falling in love with the process,” Lopez said.

This commitment has already paid off which has brought success to the team and will set up a successful second half of the season in the spring.

The women have already gone to work on getting better by breaking records at the NCAA National Preview.

According to the Javelina Athletics website, “These records stood for 10 years which were set back in 2014 the records stood at +32 on the 36-hole record and +41 on the 54-hole record.

“The Javelinas broke both records by scoring +16 for the 36-hole record and +39 for the 54-hole record.”

“I like how we are playing as a team. It’s also nice to see many of us have great rounds. It will be great for us to continue this improvement as a team,” sophomore Jamie Miller said on the team’s recent success.

The Javelinas will continue to build on this momentum with one more tournament on Oct. 21 and Oct. 22 at the Wichita Falls Country Club.
