Hogs finish second at ITF LSC Championships

Both Javelinas men and women track and field teams were heading into the championships on fire taking home six of the last eight LSC Athlete of the Week selections.

The men and women track and field teams traveled to Albuquerque, N.M to participate in the 2025 Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.

With the championships over and final results in, the Javelinas finished with a total nine first place spots, five second place spots, four third place spots and a total of 25 top five finishes.

Among those with first place finishes for the women’s team was senior Katryna Hernandez who recorded a 15.42m shot put throw. New transfer from UIW Madison Alegria finished highest in with a best of 1.73m in high jump.

Two school records were broken over the weekend. Starting with sophomore Afaf Benhadja who set a new record while finishing first in the Women’s Pentathlon with an overall score of 3,579.

Lastly, the women’s team that planned to break their record, just a few weeks prior after breaking their previous school record in the beginning of February.

In two-weeks time Cynai Christopher along with freshman Sakara Wade, freshman Onieka Brissett and senior Vitiana Robert were record breakers once again. Shattering their previous record of 3:45.75 with a new record time of 3:39.62 and finishing nearly a full second faster than the second-place team.

“After the event we were honestly excited, we didn’t think we were going to break the record, but we did, and that’s just one record of many. We plan on breaking the same record again for the conference in about two weeks. So that’s our goal,” Christopher said.

The men’s team saw five first place finishes starting with senior Ronald “Big Papi” Mosquera who is now a two-time LSC Champion. Mosquera finished first for weight throwing, recording a throw of 18.82m and a shot put throw of 17.84m.

Senior Sterling Riles joined the party with a first-place finish in the 400m run with a time of 47.72. Sophomore Jhonatan Rodriguez-Osorno also earned a first-place spot in the 800m run with a time of 1:52.06.

Not to be outdone, the men’s 4×400-meter relay team of Riles along with junior Tony Benitez, junior Cody Fountain and senior Taylor Chaney also set a new school record with a time of 3:10.30 besting their time of 3:11.80 by a second and a half set two weeks ago.

Second place finishes were Thomas Nieto in pole vault, David Guzman in shot put, Madison Ramos in the high jump, Taylor Chaney in the 400m run and Jazmin Ray in triple jump.

Third place finishes were Django Segovia in pole vault, David Guzman in weight throw, Katryna Hernandez in weight throw, and Cynai Christopher in the 200m run.

After the meet was over both teams finished second overall trailing behind West Texas A&M. The Division II Indoor Track & Field competes March 13-15, 2025 at Fall Creek Pavilion in Indiana State Fairgrounds Indianapolis, IN.
