Since the start of the Indoor Track and Field season, the Javelinas have been on a hot streak. Seven Hogs have been named Lone Star Conference Athletes of the Week.
There have been four men named, including freshman David Guzman in shot put, freshman Nirmit Dahiya in the mile, senior Ronald Mosquera in throws and most recently Thoms Nieto in pole vault.
When named in week two, Guzman threw 58’ 3.25” (17.76m) to finish as runner-up at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational. He held the top throw in the LSC this season and seventh best throw in the country.
Week five would feature a sweep from the Javelinas with Dahiya finishing runner-up in the mile and also anchored the winning Distance Medley Relay Team. Mosquera would be the man to best his teammate, Guzman who held the top shot-put distance at the time, with a throw of 59’5” (18.11m). The throw would be fifth in the entire country.
On top of his shot-put performance Mosquera finished fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 59’4.75” (18.10m), which now sits at the top of the LSC.
In week six Nieto would get the spotlight. Nieto cleared 17’3.5” (5.27m) in the pole vault, making it the fourth best in the entire country and second in the conference. In an event largely dominated by Division I competition, he would finish runner-up.
Three women have been given the title LSC Athlete of the Week for the Javelinas. Senior Cynai Christopher for sprints, sophomore Afaf Benhadja for jumps and most recently senior Jazmin Ray for triple jump.
Included in the week five sweep along with Dahiya and Mosquera were Christopher and Benhadja. Christopher won the 200 meters with a 24.20 time; it now ranks 12th in the entire country and is the best in the LSC. Benhadja took gold in the long jump with a distance of 18’5.25” (5.62). She also took bronze in high jump with a mark of 5’5” (1.65m).
Ray would get the honors in week six after breaking a TAMUK record in triple jump with a 12.39m jump. Her record-breaking dunk ranks seventh in the nation and on top of the conference.
The men’s and women’s track team’s next event was this past weekend as they competed in the LSC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
