Review: ‘The Companion’, a must see film

Getaway trip goes wrong

‘Companion’ is a science-fiction/drama film written and directed by Drew Hancock.

I feel that this movie additionally has some romance and dark comedic elements throughout its entirety, which makes the movie more suitable to a wider audience.

The film was released in theaters in the U.S. on Jan. 31.

The movie stars Jack Quaid as Josh, and his android girlfriend Iris who is played by actress Sophie Thatcher.

Co-stars Harvey Guillén and Lukas Gage also gave outstanding performances in their supporting roles.

I was a little skeptical about this movie at first due to the abundance of A.I. and android based films that have been releasing lately.

To my surprise the plot of ‘Companion’, along with its gripping blend of dark comedy, was enough to keep me hooked through the whole film.

The movie began with Sophie Thatcher’s character Iris recalling when she first met and fell in love with her boyfriend Josh.

The couple go and meet up with some friends at a very expensive lake cabin for what was supposed to be a relaxing getaway.

From the moment Iris was introduced to the friends I could tell something was off with the vibes in the room.

The weekend retreat turned into a nightmare when one of the group member’s gets murdered.

I loved how the film kept delivering tiny reveals of background information that kept getting more shocking after another.

‘Companion’ seemed like an intense sci-fi murder mystery but would keep reminding the viewer that there was a deeply rooted love story between its main characters.

This film did more than just revolve around the ethical and philosophical issues surrounding human and android relationships.

‘Companion’ was intriguing while even touching on some domestic violence relationship issues.

‘Companion’ was a fun watch, and I recommend watching it for a couples’ date night, or even just for a movie night with a group of friends.
