Javelina Media Experience takes over TIPA

Team returns triumphant from San Marcos

The South Texan participated in the annual Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) conference and competition held in San Marcos April 10-12, and student journalists brought back 29 awards, including Overall Excellence – Newspaper.

This semester The South Texan experienced a redesign by Editor-in-Chief Jacob Daniels. This was Daniels’ second TIPA.

“We wouldn’t be able to do it if we weren’t such a close team. I think that at the end of the day I couldn’t do it on my own; the only reason I’m doing it is because of my team. The only reason we won all those awards is because we are a team. So, I think winning those 29 awards is not really falling on my shoulders, it’s really falling on how successful of a program we are,” Daniels said.

There are many categories in which to compete at TIPA, including a hype video competition in which a school has roughly two days to put a TIPA hype video together for use the following year. This is an event The South Texan dominates, successfully completing a three-peat with Creative Director Dominic Valdez and Digital Editor Ciana Cortez at the helm of it all winning once again and besting Division I schools.

“It was a great experience, going to TIPA. You never know what to expect or what you’re going to find there. I was definitely pretty nervous going in and I thought for sure some of the colleges have great programs, like UTRGV and Baylor, they have great programs, they have great people doing video there. So, I wasn’t quite sure if we were going to take it, but in the end it all worked out for us,” Valdez said.

Adviser Nicole Perez Morris was named  Adviser of the Year. This was this year’s winners:
