The festival was a two-day event held on March 22 and 23 with more than 40 middle school and high school jazz bands and ensembles participating from across Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEssentially this contest is one of the heaviest contests when it comes to jazz music here in Texas. Our students get a lot of exposure, and they get to see amazing programs and perform amongst the best in the state,\u201d Raul Perez, director of bands for Wagner High School, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the participating schools gathered in the performance hall located inside the School of Music where they were judged by professional musicians and instructors. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students were then encouraged to sit and listen to their competitors to show support in the friendly competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_6012-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_6012-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_6012-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_6012-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_6012-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_6012-2048x1536.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_6012-12x9.jpeg 12w, https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_6012-24x18.jpeg 24w, https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_6012-36x27.jpeg 36w, https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_6012-350x263.jpeg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHearing all of the jazz bands I feel like it\u2019s giving me more fragments and pieces that I can put into improvise solos. I liked hearing all the different pieces, how it works together, how good people are. I was really inspired,\u201d performer Sebastian Martinez said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jazz Festival was free for all university students to come, enjoy and listen to the new musicians of tomorrow. The festival also included a guest performance from award-winning jazz bassist Linda May Han Oh, who performed with the TAMUK Jazz Combo I. This event occurs every year for schools to compete and defend their school&#8217;s title for Best Jazz Band in Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJazz is truly alive music, and it requests different kinds of interactions; it has an intimate environment from it,\u201d Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies Dr. Theresa Chen said. \u201cI enjoyed seeing all the young faces from the middle schoolers and high schoolers, and I just can\u2019t wait to interact with more of them.
