{"id":10726,"date":"2024-09-24T17:19:27","date_gmt":"2024-09-24T17:19:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/?p=10726"},"modified":"2024-09-24T17:20:36","modified_gmt":"2024-09-24T17:20:36","slug":"with-help-there-is-hope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/24\/with-help-there-is-hope\/","title":{"rendered":"With help, there is hope"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Counseling\u00a0services for students<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">eptember is Suicide Awareness Month, and Texas A&amp;M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) Counseling Services is using this opportunity to remind students that mental health support is available to all, regardless of the challenges they may be facing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While this month often focuses on suicide prevention, TAMUK counselors emphasize that students can seek help for any issue, whether significant or minor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Counseling Services team at TAMUK, consisting of licensed professionals, provides one-on-one counseling, group therapy and various workshops designed to support students. This includes addressing academic stress, personal issues or more serious mental health concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Associate Professional Counselor Andrew Gregg noted that recognizing when someone needs help can be challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cKey signs include isolation, losing interest in activities, and significant changes in eating or sleeping habits,\u201d Gregg explained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Gregg also encourages students to seek help even if their issues seem small, as early support can be crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI\u2019ve had virtual therapy since sophomore year,\u201d senior Victoria Pina said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Pina reflected on her personal experiences with the counseling services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe counselors are incredibly kind and empathetic even if I just need to vent, their feedback is incredibly helpful,\u201d she added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Privacy is a priority at TAMUK Counseling Services, with strict confidentiality maintained except in cases involving safety concerns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe want students to feel secure when seeking help,\u201d Gregg assured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Creating a supportive environment involves more than just offering services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cReducing stigma and having open conversations about mental health is crucial,\u201d Gregg said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Students and professors can contribute by listening and being present for those who might be struggling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Reassurance can go a long way towards helping someone through a tough time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIf someone is hesitant to reach out, it\u2019s important to remember that getting help is crucial, and there\u2019s always someone ready to listen,\u201d senior Eyan Freitag said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Emphasizing the importance of having accessible resources is crucial for the student body to ensure their mental health is good and their stress levels are low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAs a college student, I realize that having those resources is super important even though I don\u2019t have much experience with them. Knowing I have access and can use them whenever needed feels really empowering,\u201d senior Delray Chavez said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">For managing mental health, especially during stressful times like exams, Gregg recommends taking breaks and practicing self-care. \u201cEngage in activities that bring you joy and make use of resources like Counseling Services and the Rec Center,\u201d he suggested. The Relaxing Moment room, which includes a massage chair, weighted blanket, VR headset and aromatherapy, is also available.
