{"id":10784,"date":"2024-10-11T18:01:26","date_gmt":"2024-10-11T18:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/?p=10784"},"modified":"2024-10-11T18:02:35","modified_gmt":"2024-10-11T18:02:35","slug":"mango-o-nada-abuelas-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/index.php\/2024\/10\/11\/mango-o-nada-abuelas-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Mango O Nada: Abuela\u2019s Story"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">Through vibrant colors and expressive sculpture, Alexandria Canchola lit up the Ben Bailey Art Gallery with her solo exhibition Mango O Nada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Mango O Nada showcases Canchola\u2019s grandmother and her perspectives as a Cuban immigrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Throughout the exhibition, Canchola gives an inside look through paintings and large, hand painted scale models made of cardboard to recreate different rooms in her grandmother\u2019s home when she was growing up. The exhibit took approximately two years for Canchola to complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI really wanted to bring my grandmother\u2019s life to a different audience. She meant a lot to me, and I think a lot of people can connect to that relationship. I think there\u2019s a lot of universality in our relationships with those that came before us,\u201d Canchola said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Several students, faculty and members of the community came out to view Canchola\u2019s work at her opening Sept. 25. Carlos Villareal, lecturer in the Department of Art, Communication &amp; Theatre, was in attendance and familiar with Canchola\u2019s work throughout the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI think it\u2019s important for students to see Alexandria\u2019s work to see what\u2019s possible and the way that we can see stories and characters from our own life and create art,\u201d Villareal said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Students in attendance took note of Canchola\u2019s ability to showcase a story through her exhibit. &nbsp; Carla Villanueva, a senior art major, shared how impactful Canchola\u2019s work was to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI was very impressed\u2026and in some way I do feel connected to this artist with the dedication that she has to her family,\u201d Villanueva said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Mango O Nada will be displayed until Nov. 18 at the Ben Bailey Art Gallery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Through vibrant colors and expressive sculpture, Alexandria Canchola lit up the Ben Bailey Art Gallery with her solo exhibition Mango O Nada.
