Though only in its first two years, the Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) Trap and Skeet Club is already aiming high and hitting its target. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
What started as a group of students interested in shooting at TAMUK is becoming a competitive participation in collegiate clay target shooting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The club\u2019s momentum was in full display this past season when one of its members qualified for the 2025 Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Collegiate Nationals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Freshman Caitlyn Wientjes placed second in the Division A for trap C in skeet and sporting class. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was shocked I got second,\u201d Wientjes said. \u201cI\u2019ve been shooting for seven and a half years, since sixth grade. It takes a lot of dedication to this sport and practicing getting to this point.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The TAMUK Trap and Skeet club competes and disciplines in trap, skeet and sporting clays, while giving students a chance to build their skills, learn how to handle firearms safely and be part of a supportive team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThrough the years, being in a shooting club has taught me that people are scared of guns, in reality they\u2019re not that bad. I just teach them how to do it the proper way. We go out and shoot clays; we\u2019re not hurting anybody,\u201d Wientjes said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Still, long-term experience and knowledge isn\u2019t a requirement to get involved with the club. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter whether you\u2019ve shot or not, it\u2019s a sport you can get good at if you put in the time and effort. There\u2019s a lot of opportunities for sponsorships and scholarships,\u201d President of TAMUK Trap and Skeet Bryson Wall said. \u201cWe\u2019ve had people who were scared of firearms come out and shoot, then realize it\u2019s not that bad and end up liking it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The club continues to grow each semester, attracting students from all backgrounds who are curious about the sport. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe proudly represent TAMUK when nationally competing or other events. We strongly promote firearm safety, sportsmanship and skill development. New students are always welcome, no prior experience necessary. Whether you\u2019ve been shooting for years or never been around a firearm, we encourage you to try,\u201d senior Andrew Villarreal said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
