{"id":11588,"date":"2025-05-05T16:14:44","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T16:14:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/?p=11588"},"modified":"2025-05-05T16:14:48","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T16:14:48","slug":"el-futuro-del-pasado-is-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/05\/el-futuro-del-pasado-is-now\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018El Futuro del Pasado\u2019 is now"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A song to ring\u00a0in the 100th year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Five months into Texas A&amp;M University-Kingsville\u2019s (TAMUK) centennial celebration and Javelinas have already seen photo recreations, mariachi concerts and much more, and now it\u2019s not a centennial event to celebrate, it\u2019s a centennial song. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cEl Futuro del Pasado,\u201d or \u201cThe Future of the Past,\u201d will be the sound that will ring for the Javelinas this year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Twenty-five years ago, Dr. Greg Sanders, the coordinator of Music Theory and Composition at TAMUK, was tasked to compose a song to commemorate the Javelinas\u2019 75th year. That song was \u201cCaballos Corriendo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Fast forward to the 100th year and Sanders was tapped to create a new tune to celebrate an even bigger event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The centennial song integrates TAMUK\u2019s fight song \u201cJalisco\u201d much like how the 75th anniversary song incorporated the alma mater \u201cHail AMK.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201c\u2018Caballos Corriendo\u2019 actually is based on the Alma Mater.&nbsp; It\u2019s a process that I use that\u2019s not used by a lot of people called deconstructionism. And I like to turn the tunes and flip them inside out and move them around and interpolate notes. That one for the 75th is based on the Alma Mater. This one is based on \u2018Jalisco.\u2019 So, all the melodies and everything is reworking of \u2018Jalisco,\u2019 and you can hear at the end where I do bring in a brass choir with the rewriting of the \u2018Jalisco\u2019 just at the end of the piece,\u201d Sanders said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u2018El Futuro del Pasado\u2019 was made specifically for TAMUK\u2019s Wind Symphony which is led by Dr. Scott Jones, associate professor and director of bands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">However, the Wind Symphony wasn\u2019t the only one involved when the song premiered on Sunday, April 27.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Multiple music groups from TAMUK participated in the concert.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">With a complex song like this with a lot of moving parts revisions were constantly being made to fully include a 100th year celebration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHe\u2019s worked on this for about six months, so he really wrote this very quickly. And when you write a piece of music like this, he comes up with the ideas and he got them on paper and then we\u2019ve been working a lot. So, he\u2019ll come to the rehearsals, and we\u2019ll play a little bit and he\u2019ll be like, \u2018okay, let\u2019s tweak that.\u2019 And so, we\u2019ve been revising it as we go. So, it\u2019ll probably get revised again and again,\u201d Jones said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The song isn\u2019t just meant to be played once. \u2018El Futuro del Pasado\u2019 will be played throughout the year at all the celebratory centennial events.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhat I hope people hear from it is that it\u2019s a fun piece, that it has the \u2018Jalisco\u2019 coming in full blast at the end. So, people can kind of catch on to that. It\u2019s also designed where you can play the last part.
