Texas A&M University-Kingsville brought excitement and school spirit to the Steinke Center during its annual \u201cPack the House\u201d event, as both the women\u2019s and men\u2019s basketball teams faced Lone Star Conference rival St. Edward\u2019s University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The women\u2019s team earned a 58\u201353 victory over St. Edward\u2019s University, while the men\u2019s team competed in a close matchup but fell short, 80\u201375. Students and fans were ecstatic to see both TAMUK teams compete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the women\u2019s win, head coach Michael Madrid thanked the athletic department and the crowd for helping create an exciting atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI just want to thank the athletic department for making things happen tonight,\u201d Madrid said. \u201cIt was a smooth and fun Lone Star Conference game for us \u2014 super physical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Madrid said the team found rhythm during key stretches and enjoyed playing in front of a packed home crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt was good to see us play well and do well off the glass, in front of a great crowd,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also stressed the importance of closing strong late in the season<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPossessions matter,\u201d Madrid said. \u201cEvery possession is vital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Junior guard Kaylee Howell spoke about the team\u2019s chemistry and leadership, especially with several younger players on the roster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAll the young ones on this team are just really awesome,\u201d Howell said. \u201cThey listen, they reciprocate, and they challenge me right back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Howell added that the Javelinas\u2019 success comes from playing together as one unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI really think there isn\u2019t a selfish person on this team,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd everything we get individually comes from us working together as a great team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the men\u2019s game, TAMUK fought throughout the night but came up short against St. Edward\u2019s University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daniel Sanchez led the Javelinas with 24 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Men\u2019s head coach Omar Gonzalez opened by thanking Javelina Nation for the Pack the House turnout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFirst, I want to thank Javelina Nation for coming out tonight to support us,\u201d Gonzalez said. \u201cThat\u2019s what Javelina Nation should be like every time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although the result was disappointing, Gonzalez said he was proud of his team\u2019s effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI just can\u2019t be more proud of the effort,\u201d he said. \u201cI just wish we could have come out with a victory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gonzalez also discussed the team\u2019s fast-paced style and how tempo plays a major role in their identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s our tempo and who we want to be,\u201d he said that will determine the outcome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Pack the House held an energetic environment for both programs as they continue through Lone Star Conference games, with the Javelinas looking to build on the momentum from the night moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
