The Javelina Student Engagement Center at Texas A&M University Kingsville (TAMUK) has booked the singers performing for Homecoming week. At 8 p.m. on Oct. 16 at Mesquite Grove, up and coming Texas country singer Sam Riggs will perform with local artist J.R. Castillo as the opening act.<\/p>\n
TAMUK is incredibly excited to work with artists that represent the next big stars of Texas country and support them in their endeavor to make art and a name for themselves, organizers said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI rely a lot on students and other individuals who are really into country to provide those recommendations for our office,\u201d Assistant Director of Student Activities Loreal Robertson said.<\/p>\n
The two artists are described as a perfect fit for the campus. Castillo brings a balance of old standards of Texas Country with his own style added.<\/p>\n
\u201cMusic has been a big part of my life, my entire life,\u201d Castillo says in his Artist bio on his website.<\/p>\n
Not just a talented individual, Castillo is described as a good man to work with by many of his colleagues.<\/p>\n
\u201cWorking with JR is such a great experience,\u201d Sound Engineer Mark Cortez said. \u201cHe has become like a brother to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Not to be outdone, Riggs has quite the resume and credibility as an artist. According to his website, Riggs has gained more 2.2 million streams on Spotify, more than 600,000 views on YouTube, and his sophomore album Breathless debuted at No. 12 of the Billboard Country album charts. Riggs was also the 2016 winner of the Texas Regional Radio Awards for Top New Male Vocalist.<\/p>\n
