The highlight of the season was when\u00a0 \u201cLas Chicas\u201d defeated\u00a0 \u201cTeam Segura\u201d by a score of\u00a0 5-2 in the first Women\u2019s League Championship in program history.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to Fall 2018, there were only four leagues, Men\u2019s Blue, Men\u2019s Gold, Co-Ed Blue &amp; Co-Ed Gold. This semester was finally able to get enough willing participants to start an all-women\u2019s league.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Director of Intramural Sports Carlos Diaz has been trying to get this league started for a while and the opportunity finally came into fruition this semester.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1591\" src=\"http:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1-300x218.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1-420x307.jpg 420w, https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1-350x254.jpg 350w, https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1.jpg 633w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been trying to start up a women\u2019s league for some time now&#8230;&#8230;it\u2019s hard to find ladies that really want to play,\u201d Diaz said.<\/p>\n<p>It was a proud day for \u201cLas Chicas\u201d especially captain Krystal Cepeda, who was nearly overwhelmed with joy as she fought hard to hold the tears back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt proud of my team for sure. I was shocked that our chemistry was so good and some of us barely just met&#8230;It\u2019s exciting to be the first ever women\u2019s soccer champs at TAMUK,\u201d Cepeda said.<\/p>\n<p>She also went on to encourage other women to participate in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor other women that haven\u2019t tried&#8230;I\u2019d definitely say they\u2019re missing out on a great college experience. We may get a little competitive but&#8230;it\u2019s all fun and games literally. You make new friends and of course get to enjoy the game of soccer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Longtime friends and \u201cLas Chicas\u201d strikers Alexis Zepeda and Meagan Trevino were enjoying the night as well as they won two championships including the Inaugural Women\u2019s League title in their first semester at TAMUK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI truly did like it a lot. I met a bunch of people [whom] all like to play soccer and we all got together for the win. I\u2019m very excited for next season now,\u201d Trevino said.<\/p>\n<p>Zepeda also went on about her experience this semester.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoccer is probably the biggest thing that I\u2019ve missed doing since high school. It was nice that I was able to play it again, specifically with girls that were just as competitive as me,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m glad I met all the girls that I did while playing.
