{"id":1874,"date":"2019-02-25T19:25:37","date_gmt":"2019-02-25T19:25:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/?p=1874"},"modified":"2019-02-25T19:31:37","modified_gmt":"2019-02-25T19:31:37","slug":"conner-museums-latest-exhibit-all-about-local-quilts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/index.php\/2019\/02\/25\/conner-museums-latest-exhibit-all-about-local-quilts\/","title":{"rendered":"Conner Museum&#8217;s latest exhibit all about local quilts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Kingsville\u2019s local\nmuseum, The Conner Museum, is featuring a new exhibit through March 13 \u2013 The\nCelebration of Quilts, all crafted by the Kingsville Saturday Quilters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The quilt exhibit has\nbeen featured annually since 2001. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cI came in 2007 and simply kept up the\nrelationship and the tradition. The Celebration of Quilts is our museum\u2019s most\npopular temporary exhibit,\u201d Jonathan Plant, the museum\u2019s director said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum is located at\n905 W. Santa Gertrudis Avenue.&nbsp; The\nmuseum\u2019s goal is to help preserve South Texas culture and history, while\neducating students and the community along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plant has been the\nmuseum\u2019s director since 2013, but first arrived in 2007 as a curator.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a chance for me\nto get back to a museum setting, which is where I began my career. I love Texas\nHistory and South Texas is still very much a frontier area with amazing story\nmaterial,\u201d Plant said of deciding to come to Kingsville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local art in museums can\nhelp a community pull together by seeing beauty that was made within an area\nthat might not have been known. The quilting exhibit does this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local communications\nstudent Fernando Mercado said while he\u2019s not been to the exhibit in the past,\nit is nice to know it is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never been to a\nquilt exhibit so I would be interested in seeing what Kingsville has to offer,\u201d\nMercado said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Middle school teacher\nLino Placencio said the exhibit can provide an opportunity to experience the\nwork behind the quilts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think students can\nlearn the hard work that goes into it,\u201d he said. \u201cA simple picture from the\ninternet doesn\u2019t do it justice. It being in front of you can help get a sense\nof the hard work that was put into it.
