{"id":2796,"date":"2019-10-06T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-06T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/?p=2796"},"modified":"2019-10-02T19:46:23","modified_gmt":"2019-10-02T19:46:23","slug":"hester-inspires-tamuk-to-give","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/index.php\/2019\/10\/06\/hester-inspires-tamuk-to-give\/","title":{"rendered":"Hester inspires TAMUK to give"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&nbsp;Nation is being called to \u201cUNITE in HOPE.\u201d September was Pediatric Cancer Awareness month, and criminal justice major Alberto Oliveria III is doing his part to raise awareness on campus with the \u201cI Pledge for Brooke\u201d fundraiser.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll that is being asked for is to pledge just $1 in Brooke\u2019s memory. When we think of the number of students, faculty and staff members that make up TAMUK, that\u2019s the potential we have as a university to make a huge difference for a beautiful foundation all started by a sweet little girl, Brooke,\u201d Oliveria said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cI Pledge for Brooke\u201d fundraiser is a part of the Brooke\u2019s Blossoming Hope Foundation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEstablished in 2012, the organization is a 100 percent volunteer led non-profit. Over $350,000 has been donated to kids\u2019 cancer research. With now 103,000 patients in 52 countries directly impacted with Brooke\u2019s Blossoms headwear care packages,\u201d Oliveria said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Fund-2-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2798\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The foundation was created to honor the memory of Kingsville native Brooke Hester. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBrooke was a regular, happy, healthy little girl. Her battle with stage IV Neuroblastoma cancer led her down the path of hope to find cures, and we hope you will want to learn more about why her foundation exists to make a bigger difference for other children globally fighting all kinds of pediatric cancers,\u201d as stated by the foundation\u2019s website.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooke\u2019s mother, Jessica Hester, is the founder and driving force behind her late daughter\u2019s foundation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[TAMUK]\u2026can work together to empower a better future filled with hope for the youngest of heroes who need our voices, our helping hands and our hearts to care and make real change starting now,\u201d Hester said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proceeds help fund care packages sent to pediatric cancer patients and provides \u201ccritical funding to support pediatric cancer research and trials,\u201d as stated by the foundation\u2019s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to donating a dollar, Javelinas can purchase t-shirts that support the foundation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIndividuals can buy a shirt to support the cause that costs $15 and was made by Luis Leal who is a Ewing\u2019s Sarcoma survivor,\u201d said biomedical science major Dustyn Naldoza.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Fund-3-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2799\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Fund-3-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Fund-3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Fund-3-350x467.jpg 350w, https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Fund-3.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption>Dustyn Naldoza<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Oliveria and other student volunteers promote the fundraiser and collect donations by tabling in the SUB on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11 to 2 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018I Pledge for Brooke\u2019 fundraiser started this past Spring semester of 2019.
