{"id":2819,"date":"2019-10-09T21:43:13","date_gmt":"2019-10-09T21:43:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/?p=2819"},"modified":"2019-10-09T21:43:13","modified_gmt":"2019-10-09T21:43:13","slug":"netflix-review-big-mouth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/index.php\/2019\/10\/09\/netflix-review-big-mouth\/","title":{"rendered":"Netflix review: &#8216;Big Mouth&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The era of pubescence is one that ev-\nery person has to face when transition-\ning from childhood to adolescence.\nAlso known as the most awkward\nstage of life, puberty is an unguided\nexperience that we navigate through\nfor a few years.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Puberty is a natural experience that\neveryone trudges through; however,\nthere is very little representation of\nteens going through puberty on any\nmedia.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there have been TV shows that\ncapture the lives of teens growing up,\nonly recently have there been shows\nsolely about the experience of puber-\nty. Such shows include <em>Puberty Blues\n<\/em>(2012-14), <em>Newton Puberty <\/em>(2015-pres-\nent) and <em>Sex Education <\/em>(2019-present),\nand the animated series <em>Big Mouth\n<\/em>(2017-present).\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Big Mouth <\/em>was is a Netflix original\nseries that premiered on Sept. 29, 2017,\nwith the pilot episode \u201cEjaculation.\u201d\n<em>Big Mouth <\/em>was created by Nick Kroll,\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin and\nJennifer Flackett. This animated series\nis based on the lives of young teenag-\ner Nick Kroll (voiced by himself) and\nAndrew Goldberg (voiced by John\nMulaney).\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>Big Mouth<\/em>, Andrew, Nick and\ntheir friends go on the roller coaster\nride that is puberty. The show does not\nuse any censorship to cover up the raw\nreality of puberty.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every aspect of puberty from acne to\nmenstrual cycles to pubic hair to sexu-\nal desires is completely exposed for the\naudience to see.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Andrew, Nick and their friends\nstumble their way through pubes-\ncence, they\u2019re guided by Maurice\n\u201cMaury\u201d the Hormone Monster. Mau-\nry is an invisible monster that causes\nthe effects of puberty to kick in. He\nintroduces Andrew (who hits puberty\nfirst before Nick) and sometimes Nick\nto various sexual desires such as mas-\nturbation, porn and physical desires\nwith girls.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maury also has a counterpart named Connie who is a hormone monster for girls. Connie introduces Andrew and <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick\u2019s friend Jessie and Missy to the wonders of the menstrual cycle, random mood swings and anger spells, and the discovery of sexual desires as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With season one and two ready to\nbinge on Netflix, season three will be\nreleased on Oct. 4.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After season two, the show left off\nwith a Valentine\u2019s Day special which\nGoldberg says will follow the story\nplot and is the beginning of season\nthree.\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The era of pubescence is one that ev- ery person has to face when transition- ing from childhood to adolescence.
